Film Opening Research #2 - GET OUT
GET OUT
Get Out what as a hit horror/thriller movie that released in 2017. In the opening sequence of this film, we see various settings that carry horror connotations such as the nighttime atmosphere we see as a character enters the car. The main one would be the foggy forest filled to the brim with tall trees in every direction. The film prioritizes creating a setting before anything else with this opening as we see various things that indicate that this is a typical town, which adds a sense of realism to the film. This sense of realism is so crucial because it will make the horror aspect of this film be that much more effective when it appears. The film also makes sure to include the main characters living in a quality home together, indicating that they are most likely a couple, possibly married, that are rather well off. Assumedly, a happy and perfect couple. This keeps the audience on their toes as they are well aware of what genre of film this is and will be on the look out for something to go wrong. The drawn out credits that slowly appear on the screen during the opening sequence as all of this is going on also adds to the horror aspect of the film as it creates a rather eerie mood in the film.Being what I believe to be the second most popular genre of film, right after the typical blockbuster superhero action film, this horror film was sure to garner great attention if executed properly. Personally, I believe the main contributor to the advertisement of this film to the target audience would be the exceptional trailer that accompanied it. Specifically that one scene in which our main character can be seen sitting down in a home with tears running down his face. It drew my interest immediately as it made me curious as to what could possibly cause this grown man to be paralyzed with such genuine terror. Especially because of the setting that can be seen in the background as this is seemingly a well lit room in a regular home which contrasts the typical abandoned house of pitch black scenery that is commonly seen in the horror genre. By using actors that are relatively lesser known, the film can seen without the viewers having any preset roles for the characters that famous actors would have. For example, Dwayne Johnson would typically play a reputable tough guy due to his previous castings as well as his large physique. The film makes exceptional use of close shots and extreme close ups in this film. These shots are particularly effective in showing the raw emotions of the actors in the film which continuously adds to the audience's anxiety as the film progresses as thy become more and more exposed to the characters' fear and unease in the film. Due to the setting and the lack of supernatural events, the use of technology is limited to cuts and transitions as well as camera angles, which proves to be more than enough to make this film a superb one.
