Film Opening Research #1 - Spider-Man: No Way Home

 Spider-Man: No Way Home

Picking up from the 'Far From Home' movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home was one of the most hyped up movies in recent years. Marvel produced yet another hit blockbuster superhero movie with this one and, in my opinion, it was the best one to date. The movie starts with he iconic Marvel logo with the turning of the endless comic pages appearing within each letter before the movie begins. Going into the actual scene of the movie, it picks up essentially immediately after the end of the previous movie with the reveal of Spider-man's identity as Peter Parker. This recreates the stress and anxiety that should be felt in such a moment as such a focal point of the Spider-Man character was the secret identity aspect as Peter is not content with a life only as a hero and wishes to live as a normal person as well, which is now no longer a possibility as seen with the opening chaos of people harassing Spider-Man and those known to be close to Peter Parker. To make matters worse, he has been exposed in a negative light. With the accusation of being a murderer of another superhero, the struggles in his day to day life will become apparent as the movie progresses, creating the main conflict as soon as our film begins. The opening of the film prioritizes placing emphasis on what we already know, which is the revealing of peter parker's identity and the chaos that ensues. It does so by making use of the numerous screens in New York City and having them all focus in on Peter. The film reinforces the action genre through the iconic web-slinging of Spider-Man with MJ in his arms as they attempt to escape the chaos that has become New York City in the beginning of the movie.

Seeing as how Marvel is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, attractors for audiences in search of an action/superhero film, the movie somewhat advertises itself to get the target audiences' attention. Fans of series such as Star Wars, DC, and Marvel will watch the movie regardless of the contents simply because of how devoted they are to the series. In fact, there was speculation of a crossover with all the previous spider-men long before this movie was ever even announced. This shows how hype the fanbase must've been when the movie was announced and they could finally have the opportunity to confirm their various theories. Through the overwhelming excitement of the committed fans, people that may not be as devoted to the franchise may grow an interest in the film and make an effort to go see it, creating a snowball effect.
Considering that this is one of the most anticipated Marvel films in recent years, there was no lack of funds in this film so they were able to make full use of technologies to make the film beautiful. The usage of close-ups to show Peter's anguish at key moments as well as continuous shots during action to make it uninterrupted and have a firm grasp on the audience's attention. All in all, this was undoubtedly my favorite movie that I have watched recently.
